All intrepid owners of the real-time strategy game 'Star Trek: Armada 2' may now resume play. Activision has released a first patch, which fixes a number of issues with the Radeon 8500 and improves the KI in a few places. A comprehensive list of changes is available during installation. The patch is compatible with both the German and English versions of the game, however after installation, you will be unable to access your previous game saves.
However, an Armada's Alpha Fleet does not have total authority over all of its Fleets. The Alpha Fleet may invite or dismiss only the Beta Fleets immediately behind it. Beta Fleets, in turn, are the only Fleets capable of inviting or expelling the three Gamma Fleets. Additionally, if a Beta Fleet quits or is expelled from an Armada, it retains all of its Gamma Fleets and becomes the Alpha Fleet of a newly created Armada, with its Gamma Fleets becoming Beta Fleets. While any Fleet may withdraw from an Armada at any time, joining one is a significant commitment. Any Fleet that joins an Armada will be ineligible for any incentives or Armada contributions until a probationary period has passed. During this probationary phase, any commander of the Fleet above it has the authority to exclude them from the Armada immediately. Alternatively, if any of your Fleet commanders determines during the probationary time that the Armada is not the proper atmosphere for your Fleet, they may depart immediately, once again with no waiting period.

Unfortunately, those hoping to conquer the universe in one fell swoop may be disappointed by Star Trek: Armada for a variety of reasons. The first reason is because, like the other species' campaigns, the Borg's fit nicely into the tale. This is an intriguing concept in and of itself, but it does have the disadvantage of preventing you from altering the plot. You cannot, for example, absorb the Enterprise or the Earth and govern the galaxy (on a permanent basis, at least). Having the bad guys prevail seems to be out of the question - the Federation always comes to the rescue. Second, as David Finn points out in his rather exhaustive assessment, the Borg in Armada are quite weak in comparison to their counterparts in the Star Trek: First Contact film and the Star Trek: Next Generation series.

When it comes to space operas such as Star Trek or Babylon 5, you may have all the square-jawed heroes you want, but what a program really needs are some really evil adversaries. Bablyon 5 did an excellent job of this, with their sinister Shadows with their jet black ships and cunning machinations. And the central antagonist of the entertainingly off-kilter Lexx was a strange shadowy lifeform that initially ruled a rather macabre universe-dominating empire (which Star Wars' Imperial Empire had nothing on) and later evolved into a sort of half-machine creature capable of piecemeal universe destruction.

Thus, although the campaign mode lacks arcade excitement and the additional strategic features diminish the overall sense of space battle, there is still much to enjoy for Trek enthusiasts and non-Trekkies equally. Some players may choose to bypass the narrative mode entirely in favor of skirmishes and multiplayer, which is definitely not a terrible thing. If Activision and new developer Mad Doc can come up with more intriguing things for these races to accomplish throughout campaigns, introduce larger ships to more races, and retain the multiplayer as-is, we may see a third version that surpasses them all. Apart from bug fixes, the patch introduces two new features to Armada 1. The first is support for widescreen (all resolutions). This is a relatively straightforward implementation. While you may now run Armada 1 at its native display resolution, the graphical user interface will remain extended. Modders might address this by developing new interface files. Another issue is that some resolutions seem to be ineffective. The game fails immediately upon startup. I'm not certain why this happens. Armada seems to be unable to establish a 'device' for certain resolutions. The reason behind this might be because Armada's implementation of DirectX 7 is no longer cutting-edge. The second feature enables the map editor mode to be used in a 'live' game (similar to Armada 2). This is handy for debugging (modding) reasons and, of course, for everyone who has ever desired to command a fleet of Enterprise Ds in their skirmish games. This function needs installation of the map editor files and, of course, works only in singleplayer modes. To switch between game and editor mode, open the in-game chat and enter 'edit'.
