The majority of older books are in scanned image format due to the fact that the original digital layout files either did not exist or were no longer accessible from the publisher. Each page in the PDF download versions has been scanned using optical character recognition (OCR) software in an effort to decode the printed text. To facilitate text searches, the output of this OCR procedure is hidden below the image of each scanned page. However, any text in a book that is placed against a graphical backdrop or in handwritten typefaces is unlikely to be recognized by OCR software and hence is not searchable. Additionally, a few bigger volumes may have been resampled to fit inside the system and hence lack this searchable text backdrop.
