According to EW, Shameless alum Richard Flood has been cast in a recurring role on Grey's Anatomy's season 16 as Dr. Cormac Hayes, the new chief of Pediatric Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial. Naturally, Alex Karev was the hospital's previous chief of Pediatric Surgery until he was sacked, along with Richard and Meredith, at the conclusion of season 15. Alex has now gone to Pac North Hospital, where he works as chief of surgery. (He earlier gained some experience in the role of chief when he filled in for Bailey.) And so far, Karev has been successful in recruiting Richard Webber and Owen Hunt for the post. As we approach a battle of the hospitals, it's unsurprising that Bailey is attempting to bolster her team with a few of new faces as well.
'Three years on the show felt perfect for me, and I believe that the character's journey, with all the events in the tale, was nearing its natural conclusion, which was fantastic. I was overjoyed that everyone felt the same way and immediately set to work,' he continued. When questioned whether he had'mixed feelings' about leaving such a popular program, Flood maintained, 'Honestly, I was overjoyed. I believed that was the appropriate moment.'
Flood added that it was ultimately up to the show's writers to choose how his departure would develop.
"They devised the egress," he said. "I didn't know how it would play out until closer to the time of filming, but there had been a few talks over the summer about how the season might develop, and then further discussions throughout the season about what would be good [for the show] and what may be good for me."
