Roberts was born and reared in a disadvantaged area of Salford and left school at the age of 14 to begin a seven-year apprenticeship as a brass finisher. After being laid off, he spent three years jobless and enrolled in evening studies. He was appointed as a teacher at a business college in 1929 but was fired in 1940 after being excused from conscription due to his conscientious objection.
