What is the location of the Atacama Desert? It runs for 600-700 miles (1,100-1,100 kilometers) in Chile, a South American country. It is the driest non-polar desert on Earth. Additionally, it is the oldest! According to experts, the Atacama's deep core has been hyper-arid for at least 15 million years. Why are scientists making comparisons between the Atacama Desert and Mars? The area is characterized by a very arid environment. The desert has even been used in films as an alien environment. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a well-known example. However, its resemblance to the Martian terrain is not limited to excellent Hollywood pictures. Scientists hope that studying this desert would enable scientists to have a better understanding of what life may be like on Mars.

Deserts encompass more than one-fifth of the Earth's land surface and occur on all continents. A desert is defined as an area that gets fewer than ten inches (25 cm) of rain each year. Deserts are a subset of a larger category of landscapes known as drylands. These places are typically in a âmoisture deficit,â which means they lose more moisture via evaporation than they get from yearly precipitation. 3:37
Soils of the Desert
The primary characteristics of desert soil that determine water and nutrient availability are texture, organic matter content, pH, and orientation in relation to the landscape. Desert soils often exhibit limited development from parent material, and some writers assert that deserts do not have typical developed soils. The majority of desert soils are classed as Aridisols and are further divided into those that have a clay (argilic) horizon (Argids) and those that do not contain such horizons (Argids) (Orthids). Other soil types that are less prevalent in deserts are mollisols, which have dark A horizons, and vertisols, which are cracking clay soils. Accumulated subsurface horizons containing clays or calcium carbonate (calcic horizons) have an evident meaning as water infiltration obstacles.
