Storyline Following the first slaughter in 1974, the villagers blamed the Sawyer family. A vigilante mob of outraged neighborhood residents approached the Sawyer home, setting it on fire and murdering every member of the family. When Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III was released, it garnered generally poor reviews. It now has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 19 percent. According to Richard Harrington of the Washington Post, the film's failure was due to the modifications done to get a R classification "They filmed an X film but cut it down to a R in order to satisfy the MPAA ratings board. Whether it was a marketing stunt or not, this current episode is noticeably devoid of gore." According to Chris Parcillian of Film Threat, it's "just another generic slasher film with nothing to recommend it to discriminating fans outside the Leatherface link." David Nusair of Reel Film Reviews was kinder, but still disapproved of the film: "'Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III' improves slightly as the action moves into the cannibals' oddly well-kept home, as the film is temporarily lifted out of its doldrums with an emphasis on the family's bickering and their callous mistreatment of their two captives."
