Al-Hijr is Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Monument. It is a spectacular site from the Nabataean civilization. Faades, cave art, and water walls are among the site's most remarkable features, going all the way back to the first century BC. The park's restorations were finished in August 2019, and it was an amazing treat to meander through this garden of a formal, rose-infused English-style paradise during our September visit. These grounds are adorned with around 1,500 roses. A tiny, circular fountain greets visitors at the entrance gates, and trails wind around the gardens. A large swath of grass provides a welcome visual contrast to the roses; near the lawn's edge, a white sculpture reclines. Her anguish is evident; she will entice you in for a closer examination (and your sympathies, too).

The monument was originally created in 1947 to honor Soviet forces who died freeing the nation, but the engraving was subsequently modified to honor âall who gave their lives for Hungary's independence, freedom, and prosperityâ.
The panoramic views from underneath the monument are unmatched, and contribute to making the climb to the top of the hill worthwhile.
