The Millennium Biltmore Los Angeles, located in the city's freshly revitalized and dynamic downtown district, is brimming with elaborate embellishments that ooze Hollywood elegance and glamour. For than a century, this historic monument has entertained visitors and continues to attract audiences to its well-preserved, magnificent interior spaces. The Millennium Biltmore Hotel's easy location, rich history, and spectacular architecture made it a great option for my daughter and me to vacation to Southern California. I loved the reasonable price range and subtle feeling of elegance in an area densely packed with hotels of various types, from no-frills motels to the Ritz-Carlton.
The Millennium Biltmore is more akin to a three-star facility. Certainly not a 4. The public areas are in better condition than the rooms. This is a historic hotel, however it is in desperate need of renovation. Our room had nicks in the tub, a hole in the bathroom door where the lock was supposed to be, holes in the shower curtain that had mildew on the bottom, shredded towels and bath mats with threads falling off the edges, and paint was peeling off the bottom of the sink stand. The doors, particularly the bathroom door, required WD40 to eliminate the awful squeaks. There is no makeup mirror. A hairdryer is a tiny, portable drier. The bathroom has a limited amount of shelf space. This boutique inn was converted from a 1920s YWCA into a beautiful hotel. However, a horrible background that involves two murders and a suicide, as reported by the Los Angeles Weekly, cannot be remodeled away. Cecilia Oswald was one of the murder victims. According to the Weekly, she was murdered in April 1950, her nude corpse found in one of the hotel rooms after her companion said, âI murdered her. I murdered her because I loved her.
Each ballroom on the Galleria level is designed either the room's historic use or the hotel's broader California-heritage motif. The Emerald Room was once the hotel's principal guest dining room; its design is inspired by hunting and harvesting, with hand-painted animals and fish adorning the cast-plaster ceiling beams. Previously, the Tiffany Room was an open hallway that served as a drop-off area for Crystal Ballroom events. The exquisite room, which has been enclosed, is centered on adventure, with relief sculptures and panels commemorating Queen Isabella I of Castile, as well as Christopher Columbus and other Spanish New World explorers. The split-level Gold Area, which was once a dining room for privileged visitors, has secret liquor compartments from the Prohibition period and panels along the ceiling allowing press photographers to capture the action below. A little child is reported to run about the 10th level (which also serves as the Club Lounge); a nurse ghost is claimed to haunt the second floor; and a small girl is said to haunt the ninth floor (though not, mercifully, twins à la âThe Shiningâ). On the fifth level, we even had our own brush with the otherworldly (although that is best left unsaid for the time being).
