View 20 First Fleet Botany Bay Australia - On 13 May 1787, the British Admiralty sent a fleet of 11 ships, dubbed the First Fleet, from England to New Holland. The fleet, led by Captain Arthur Phillip, planned to create a prison colony at Botany Bay on the coast of New South Wales, which Lieutenant James Cook investigated and claimed in 1770. Lady Penrhyn (prison transport) - 333 tons, constructed in 1786 on the Thames for alderman Curtis and skippered by Master William Sever. The Alexander was 114 feet long and 31 feet wide at the beam. It was captained by Master Duncan Sinclair. Her debut journey was with the First Fleet, and after that, she was purchased by Wedderburns.
The First Fleet landed at Botany Bay on 24 January 1788 after a three-month trip. Here, after 40,000 years of seclusion, the Aboriginal people encountered the British in an uncomfortable standoff at what is now known as Frenchmans Beach in La Perouse. Captain Arthur Phillip was named Commodore of the fleet, which became known as the First Ship, in September 1786. The fleet's mission was to bring convicts and troops to establish a colony at Botany Bay. Phillip was to take the positions of Captain General and Governor in Chief of the new colony upon his arrival.
